and I’ve learned so much! One thing is that I’ll never be that sit down and write something every day person.
It’s been a big learning year. Learning about where I want to go… on so many levels.
Artistically I’m appreciating many comments about the spiritually seen in both my painting and photography. It’s hard to think of myself as a religious person. As a Unitarian Universalist I accept all faiths and paths to how one defines god. I vehemently reject the intolerance which is attached to so many orthodox faiths. So I’m enjoying bringing more power to the goddeses and gods that inhabit my work. So often, like in the photo Poseidon’s Hand, the image surprises me as I edited. It is as if the goddesses were doing their thing!
I’m finding my heroes working their way into my work. Being as passionate about politics as I am you will start seeing more of those forces finding their painterly voice. (Just recently Ted Kennedy’s face appeared in the granite behind a waterfall.)
I’m still trying to find my market. I like going to the art fairs and outdoors shows just for the simple honest interaction with people. Where to go in 2011? There’s nothing more cool than that little 3 year old girl who studied my kayak goddess painting, then quite seriously looked at me and asked “how did you do that?” I could see in her parents that she would not lack paints and encouragement.
I wish I didn’t have to deal with the whole business thing. You know the book keeping and files and stuff. It’s just distracting. The last time I ran a business I had a pencil and a ledger pad. hmmm. I think I still have that ledger pad.
OK, now I need to get my act together and post some new work!

Some days are just powerful! June 11, 2010; The day after my youngest hit the 18 year milestone as a high school graduate, and my priority of attention focus became a little more mine!
Ready.Set.Go! was a conference sponsored by Ma Rehab for employers of people with disabilities. It’s always hard as an artist/business person to know how much publicly to speak about your disabilities but you must to honor those giving you a helping hand to be able to concentrate on our abilities. That’s what this conference was all about; honoring the employers who looked beyond disabilities, and hired people for their abilities.
I heard about the Western Mass Artists with Disabilities (now Artists Beyond Challenges … ABC) a while ago and joined. It’s hard to get a business going. All help accepted. Recently they forwarded an invitation from the Mass Rehab commission to submit art to be used as gifts for the speakers at their conference. My photo of the “Impex on the Connecticut with Clouds” was selected. An honor! I was asked to come and bring some work to share. Well, it seemed an opportunity worthy of the drive to Boston and it was! I felt a bit like a celebrity!
I was so inspired by the comments on my work. And surprised about how much support there was for my abstract painting! It just makes me want my brushes!
The obstacles that come with a disability can be so discouraging at times but no one can be more inspiring by example than State Commissioner Carr, who has been paralyzed from the neck down since he was 17. He’s an amazing example of staying focused on what he can do!
I’d like to thank all those who have encouraged me and others, to be able to use our abilities; and most importantly to succeed on our abilities regardless of our disabilities. Diagnosed or not, isn’t that what defines all of us?
